CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia's baseball team is one of the top-ranked squads in the nation and when the season starts Friday, coach Brian O'Connor wants the Cavaliers to be challenged from the outset.

It's all with an eye on where they finish the year.

The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 by Baseball America and other outlets, will be tested early with games in Wilmington, N.C., against three established programs. Virginia plays Kentucky on Friday, VMI on Saturday and N.C.-Wilmington on Sunday.

O'Connor says his team "will get every bit of that" challenge against the competition in Wilmington.

The Cavaliers have played in 10 straight NCAA tournaments and two College World Series under O'Connor.

They fell short of the CWS last season when they were swept in a super regional at home by Mississippi State.
