WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Radio One of Washington, DC honored WUSA9's JC Hayward and WJLA's Leon Harris on Tuesday for their outstanding journalism and excellence in community service at the 2013 Radio One DC Media Appreciation Awards Luncheon.

JC Hayward was more than excited to share this special moment with her friends, fans, and WUSA9 colleagues including Andrea Roane, Lesli Foster, Derek McGinty, and Mike Hydeck. Hayward's colleagues came to cheer on and support Hayward for her achievements as a woman who paved the way for many other reporters to shine in the 41 years she's been reporting the news in Washington.

"When I came to Channel 9 in 1972, there weren't any woman heroes "Sheroes" that I could look up to," explained Hayward. "One of my dreams was that someday I would leave a legacy for young women especially African American women to look up to, and I hope I've done that."

The Radio One Media Awards take place every year and salute the best and brightest in our industry. Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, and Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett congratulated the two on their success and contributions to our communities, while local jazz musician, Marcus Johnson, performed for JC Hayward and Leon Harris.

Congratulations to JC Hayward & Leon Harris!
