WASHINGTON (AP/WUSA9) - Former District of Columbia mayor Marion Barry says it will be more difficult for Mayor Vincent Gray to win re-election amid allegations by federal prosecutors that he knew about an illegal "shadow campaign" in 2010.
Barry told The Associated Press Friday night that Gray has a solid record as mayor but that "the shadow campaign has masked a lot of the good things" he's done.
Prosecutors said on Monday that Gray knew about the $668,000 in illicit funds poured into his 2010 campaign by businessman Jeffrey Thompson, who pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges. Barry says the timing of the Thompson plea deal was "strange" and that Gray deserves the presumption of innocence. Gray has denied the allegations, and Barry says he's more inclined to believe Gray than Thompson.
