WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The leader of the Nation's Mosque has released a statement condemning the murder of journalist Steven Sotloff.
Imam Talib Shareef released the statement in response to the video showing the journalist being beheaded.
In the statement, Shareef noted said that "pending authentication in the wake of yet another horrific killing by the criminal terrorists group ISIL, we extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family of Steven Sotloff".
A video that appeared to show Sotloff being beheaded was released by the Islamic State on Tuesday. The U.S. intelligence community concluded that the video was genuine on Wednesday.
Shareef's statement went on to say that "we join the world in strongly condemning ISIL for the inhumane, barbaric, cowardly murder of innocent life and their countless acts of extreme violence against humanity."
