WASHINGTON (AP) - A Romanian hacker is facing charges in Virginia that he accessed the Facebook and email accounts of former high-ranking U.S. government officials.
Marcel Lehel Lazar, a hacker known as "Guccifer" was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Virginia.
Lazar faces charges including wire fraud, unauthorized computer access, cyberstalking and aggravated identity theft.
Lazar is accused of hacking into the email and Facebook accounts of several people including: a former U.S. Cabinet member, a former member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, a former presidential adviser and a person related to two former presidents. The individuals are not identified in the indictment.
The word "Guccifer" was visible in private Bush family photos that were leaked to the media in 2013.
Multiple media reports say Lazar is jailed in Europe. Court documents in the U.S. didn't list a lawyer for him.
