A 2½-month-old baby was mauled to death in Springfield Township, Mich., about 30 miles northwest of Detroit, by a family dog on Sunday morning.

The attack happened at 11:41 a.m., according to a news release from the Oakland County, Mich., Sheriff's Office. The infant's 18-year-old uncle, who lives at the residence, was holding the child on the couch when the dog tried to jump up on the couch and was pushed off. The dog attempted to jump back up and began attacking the infant in the head and throat area.

The child's father was able to pry the dog's jaws open and release the infant from the dog's hold. The father also sustained injuries as a result of the attack.

Deputies arrived as the father was placing the boy in his truck to take him to the hospital. The deputies immediately began CPR.

The baby was taken to the Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc Township, then airlifted to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The infant died at Beaumont.

The family owned the dog, a 3-½-year-old female Catahoula cattle hound, for more than two years.

Authorities said the dog had bitten a neighbor on the arm several months ago, but it did not result in a serious injury.

The Oakland County Animal Control Office took the dog in custody and will be put to sleep.

"This is a tragic incident and it is a sad reminder to keep animals away from small children and babies no matter what the circumstances may be," said Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard in the release. "Animal behavior, whether intended as playful or territorial, can have devastating impact on small children."

The fatal mauling was the most recent in a string of dog attacks in metro Detroit.

A 7-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull on Detroit's west side around 8 p.m. on Sunday night. The child was accidentally shot by a person who intervened in the attack. The dog, around 3 years old, was also shot and later died.

A 3-year-old Pontiac boy was severely injured in April when he was mauled by a pit bull. The boy had to undergo multiple surgeries after sustaining severe bites to his head, face and neck.
