CAPE CHARLES, Va. (WVEC) -- Va. State Police say two people were killed and least 20 were hurt when a severe storm swept through the Cherrystone Campground in Cape Charles.

Norma Lassiter, who works there, says there was a lot of panic and it was chaos this morning. She's okay, but she saw a lot of injuries.

Several children have been hurt at the campground on Virginia's Eastern Shore, where a tornado reportedly touched down.

Amanda Blankenship with the Eastville Volunteer Fire Department told 13News Now during a live interview at 9:20 a.m., "Several children have been injured at the campground. I don't know how many, but they have called for several ambulances to go there."

Jordan Bertok tweeted two photos of damage at the campground, saying "Just lived through a tornado."

Sentara spokesman Dale Gauding says Beach General is preparing to care for some of the injured from the campground, but he didn't have any information on the extent of injuries.

"Three Sentara hospitals are making mass casualty preparations - Sentara Norfolk General, Sentara Virginia Beach General and Sentara Leigh. We anticipate multiple patients, but will not know how many until they arrive at each hospital," he said.

Northampton Co. was under a tornado warning until 9 a.m. after National Weather Service radar indicated a waterspout over the Chesapeake Bay.

Joe Burbee with Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles says there was lots of rain and lightning this morning.

"We got it pretty hard here for 15-20 minutes and it's gotten better," he said.

The golf course is about a mile from the campground.
13News Now viewer Linda Wenners Zaremski emailed a photo of large pieces of hail that fell at Marina Villages in Cape Charles.

"Debris was flying down the street -- our chairs, beach balls. We lost power," she said.

During the warning, forecasters advised residents take cover, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. Those in a mobile home, vehicle or outside, were urged to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

Meantime, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for southwestern Isle of Wight Co., east central Southampton Co. and the cities of Suffolk and Franklin until 9:30 a.m. and for Chesapeake and Norfolk until 10:15 a.m.
