(WUSA9) -- Virginia Lottery officials say the winner of $1 million had the ticket in his wallet for 11 days before he discovered he had won.
According to officials, Robert Manning of Springfield was literally sitting on the winning ticket, which was in his wallet, for 11 days. He decided to clean out his wallet and found about a dozen Powerball tickets. Numbers from the ticket he bought at the 7-Eleven at 6221 Rolling Road in Springfield for the March 5 drawing matched the first five numbers for the drawing.
The winning numbers were 3-7-9-26-54, and the Powerball number was 19. If the ticket matched that final number, the Powerball number, it would have won the $40 million jackpot, say officials.
Manning is a federal employee with a child in college and another planning to go to college next year.
Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays and broadcast on TV stations across Virginia and live on www.valottery.com.
