TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- A large fire that broke out in an unoccupied home kept dozens of firefighters busy in Takoma Park early Wednesday morning.

Captain Oscar Garcia, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, says dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting the blaze in the 6800 block of Westmoreland Avenue just before 3:00 a.m. Once on scene firefighters found the two-story single family home almost fully engulfed in flames. Additional units were requested immediately. According to Captain Garcia, it took approximately 55 firefighters twenty minutes to douse the fire.

Right now crews are still opening up walls and hitting hot spots. Two firefighters have been transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Garcia says neighbors claim the house has been unoccupied for sometime, and complain it has become an eyesore with overgrown vegetation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
