WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Prince William County police say a woman was raped in her apartment by an unknown intruder Wednesday morning.
Officials say it happened at 4:30 a.m. in the 13700 block of Keelingwood Circle in Woodbridge, Va. The victim, a 34-year-old woman, told police she was asleep in her residence when she awoke to an unknown man inside her bedroom.
The suspect was armed with a handgun and raped the victim before leaving the apartment, police say.
The woman's two children were inside, asleep at the apartment at the time of the incident, police say. They were unharmed.
Police say the apartment had no signs of forced entry, although the doors were locked.
"It's possible the suspect had a key. We don't know. We're looking into that," said First Sgt. Kim Chinn, spokesperson for the Prince William County Police Department.
Police say the woman is certain she did not know the rapist. Authorities are now looking into the possibility that someone got a hold of a key around the apartment complex -- for example, a master or a duplicate key.
"There are keys when you live in an apartment situation, sometimes people need access," pointed out First Sgt. Chinn.
WUSA9's Mola Lenghi reports the victim woke her kids up after the incident, took them to her friends house, and then went to the hospital immediately where she explained the incident to Police.
During a canvass of the apartment complex, neighbors reported to police that a suspicious male was seen on multiple occasions lingering in the area.
Based on their description of the suspicious man, said First Sgt. Chinn, police developed a composite sketch.
Police are not sure if it is the alleged rapist, but say it is currently their best lead.
The victim says she is certain she did not know him, police reported.
The suspect is described as a black male, unknown age, with short black hair, medium build and an unshaven face. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, jeans and a dark colored jacket.
