RIVERDALE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A woman is dead and a child is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in the 5800 block of Riverdale Road in Riverdale, Monday afternoon.
Both of the victims were taken to the hospital, however the adult did not make it, police said.
Witnesses tell WUSA9, vehicles in two of the three lanes on the road stopped to allow the mother and child to cross. However, an SUV in the third lane did not stop or slow down and hit the two as they were trying to cross.
Witnesses also said, they believe the driver was on the phone or possibly texting when the accident happened.
Many people WUSA9 spoke with said, this is a potentially dangerous area for pedestrians. There is a church, supermarket, stores and a bank in the area. Plus, up the street there is a middle school and a Metro stop. There is no streetlight at the intersection.
With heavy vehicle and foot traffic, those who live in the area say, a crosswalk is not enough, a traffic light or flashing lights would make it a safer walk.
Witnesses said, the mother and daughter were in fact using the crosswalk, and the SUV just sped through. Police are still investigating.
Authorities will determine whether or not the driver will be charged based on the investigation.
According to authorities, the driver stayed on scene.
