WOODBINE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Howard County fire officials have released more information about a fatal tree collapse that occurred this weekend.
A tree fell on a 75-year-old man in the 2800 block of Daisy Road in Woodbine, Md., at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to officials.
"Upon arrival, the crew located an adult male who had sustained fatal injuries. Witnesses indicate that a large tree fell on him while he was tending to a grill. The exact cause of the tree falling is still under investigation, however it appeared to be rotten and gave way," Howard County Fire officials said on Saturday.
Three children, ages 9, 10 and 16, received minor injuries after the tree fell. Two were treated and released from the hospital while the third was not transported to the hospital, say officials.
Fire officials say the man and children were at a family gathering. The man was the grandfather of the children who were injured. The man's heart was not beating and he was not breathing when paramedics arrived at the scene.
"The house has been posted as uninhabitable due to a large hole in the roof. HCDFRS' Chaplain along with the Red Cross are aiding the family," officials said.
