HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Maryland State Police Department responded to a tractor-trailer accident involving two vehicles that happened Wednesday afternoon on eastbound I-70 at Rt 66 Exit 35.
The investigation showed that a 2005 Volvo truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer was going east on I-70 in the slow lane. Kent Nixon, 59, of Linthicum, Md. was driving the truck tractor, police said.
A 2003 Mercury Sable station wagon was in front of the truck tractor in the same lane, authorities said. Caterina Earle, 55, of Bethesda was driving the station wagon.
The truck hit the back of the station wagon, which caused it to lose control, police said. The station wagon then overturned and stopped on Md. Rt. 66 to I-70 East.
The truck then ended up in the fast lane and hit a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, Police said, Dale Ehrhardt, 76, of Laurel was driving the vehicle. The truck tractor came to a stop in the grassy center median, authorities said.
Both Nixon and Ehrhart were taken to the Mertius Medical Center, along with Ehrhart's partner, Karen Ehrart, 78.
I-70 in the area of Md. Rt, 66 was closed until 3 p.m., in order to remove the vehicles, authorities said.
The truck driver was charged with negligent driving for causing the vehicle collision, police said.
