WASHINGTON (WUSA 9) -- A warrant has been obtained charging Jernard Linton Cooke, a 28-year-old resident of Hyattsville, with two counts of first degree assault after he reportedly fled from police officers and attempted to strike them with his SUV, said Montgomery County Police.

Police officers saw Cooke driving a maroon Ford SUV at speeds of close to 100 miles per hour southbound on Georgia Avenue at roughly 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. Officers stopped him at Georgia and Connecticut Avenues, but he fled the scene. A few minutes later, officers at the 8200 block of Georgia Avenue recognized the SUV's description from a lookout and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the Cooke drove toward the officers and traveled into the District.

Police said County officers followed the vehicle into the District and were able to stop the vehicle at Van Buren Street near Blair Road. During this stop, a Montgomery County officer discharged his firearm and hit one tire of the SUV. No one was hurt as a result of the firearm being discharge and the officer who discharged his weapon is on paid administrative leave.

Police said that Cooke is being held in the District on the strength of the warrant and is awaiting extradition.
