CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Charles County Sheriff's Office arrested a 29-year-old man who broke into at least 12 cars and stole cell phones, money, clothing and jewelry in Charles County.
Authorities said they responded to the report of a suspicious man looking into windows of cars in the area of Marshall Road in Waldorf on Wednesday morning. When deputies got to the scene, they did not find the man, authorities said.
According to authorities, about an hour later another person contacted police and said they saw a man going through cars.
Deputies found the suspect hiding in someone's backyard.
All of the stolen items were found.
Travis Demetrius Smoot, 29, was arrested and charged with theft, authorities said.
