TIMONIUM, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police are investigating a fatal crash involving several victims on the ramp from southbound I-83 to the outer loop I-696 that happened Tuesday in Baltimore County.
Maryland State Police said they found three people dead at the scene of the single vehicle crash around 4 p.m. Authorities said they got a call from a driver who said they saw a vehicle off the roadway on the ramp from southbound I-83 to the outer loop of I-695 near Timonium, Md.
Once authorities got to the scene they found a passenger car that was broken into several pieces. Police said the three people were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The victims are identified as Vignesh Ashokan, 23, Sharath Sudershanam, 24, and Moka Mallikarjun, 25. The three were friends and roommates who lived in Fairfax, Va.
The investigation shows that the vehicle was going on the ramp from southbound I-83 when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway and went in the heavily wooded gore area on the left side of the road.
Police said the vehicle hit a big tree, which forced the vehicle to break into pieces.
Authorities still do not know when the crash actually happened. Deputies are still at the scene and the investigation continues.
Deputies said they have not been able to determine if the occupants were wearing seatbelts due to the severe vehicle damage.
The left lane of the ramp is closed, however traffic is able to pass in the right lane.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
