PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police said a Md. man who fled in his car when an officer tried to stop him for a traffic violation Sunday afternoon was fatally injured only minutes later in a car crash in Calvert County.

Maryland State Police said the deceased driver has been identified as Jaie M. Perrizo, 27. Authorities said he is a man from Baltimore and was driving a 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer at the time of the accident.

The other driver in the accident has been identified as Ryan C. Fisher, 31, of Port Republic, Md. Fisher is currently at the Prince George's Hospital Center being treated for his injuries. Police said, Fisher was driving a 2010 Ford Escape.

Around 3 p.m. Sunday, a Maryland State Police Trooper was monitoring traffic in the area of Rt. 4 close to Industry Lane. The trooper saw the Mitsubishi going northbound without a front registration plate. Authorities said, the trooper attempted to stop the driver.

According to police, the Mitsubishi pulled over to the shoulder, however once the trooper pulled up behind the vehicle, the driver sped off.

Authorities said the trooper pursued the vehicle as it turned onto a side road, then onto Main Street in Prince Frederick. The driver approached the intersection of Main Street and Rt. 4, turned left and went southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway, swerving back and forth across the traffic.

At that point the trooper ordered the pursuit to be ended out of concern for public safety. Police said, moments later, the vehicle hit the Ford Escape going northbound on Rt. 4 south of Sixes Road.

Police said two Maryland State Police helicopters flew both drivers to the Prince George's Hospital Center.

Authorities are still investigating the crash. Police said the pursuit lasted less than three minuted and covered about three and one-half miles.

It is unknown why the Perrizo refused to stop for the trooper.
