PASADENA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police are still trying to figure out who may be responsible for shooting a Reston kayaker.

Officers with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have been out patrolling the creek side in Pasadena, Maryland in Anne Arundel County.

Folks take to a peaceful boat ride at Main Creek on a Saturday afternoon near Mathias Cove.

However what happened a week ago has new boater Drew Hawkins concerned.

Drew Hawkins said, "you'd think that being out on the water you'd be safe the last thing you'd think is that you'd arbitrarily be targeted."

David Seafolk-Kopp, 56 from Reston was Kayaking and stargazing around 10:30 p.m. last Saturday night. He told police he saw a bonfire and sounds of a party going on when he felt pain in his stomach.

He had been shot. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The incident still remains a mystery.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources has been patrolling, talking to people and following up on leads. There were people in the area at the time who thought they heard firecrackers but are re-examining what they heard.

Michael Ciurca said, "they were asking everyone about the incident that happened last Saturday."

Police say the kayaker could have been hit by a stray bullet. They say he was not targeted or stalked and that the wound is not consistent to a self inflicted gunshot.

But they don't know exactly why it took 12 hours for him to get back to a friend's house to call for help.

Seafolk-Kopp told police he had passed out.

Don Adkins, a resident said, "It makes you wonder what might have happened. I'm not going to change my habits. I'm not going to stay off the water."
