ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The state schools superintendent has denied Anne Arundel County's request for a five-day waiver for snow days this winter.

Lillian M. Lowery denied the request for a waiver of the 180-day school year requirement on Friday. The county schools system had cancelled classes for nine days this winter; four snow days were built into the schedule.

Interim county schools superintendent Mamie Perkins will ask the state to allow classes on April 21, the day after Easter. Perkins tells The Capital of Annapolis (http://bit.ly/P2NrTv) that if the state grants that waiver, she will seek another single-day waiver.

Perkins says she plans to move the last day of class to June 20. The last class day was originally scheduled for June 17.
