CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Maryland (WUSA9)--Fernando Witcher, of District Heights, Maryland, has nominated some potholes in neighboring Capitol Heights for our Pothole Alert of the Day.

MORE: Where To Report Potholes

"Worst pothole in the state of Maryland. Corner of Walker Mill Road and Karen Boulevard. So bad they put 5 cones in the hole," Witcher wrote WUSA9.

When the WUSA9 Pothole Patrol paid a visit to this intersection, sure enough there were the cones Mr. Witcher was talking about, along with a waist high barrel. A closer look at the cones reveals the letters WSSC which stands for the
Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

It turns out the craters are the result of a ruptured water main. In fact, you can see a large amount of water gurgling from the road's surface.

Jerry Irvine with the WSSC tells WUSA9 the agency plans on starting work at this site Monday at 6pm and by the time rush-hour starts Tuesday morning commuters should notice a repaired water main and a temporary patch to the road with back-fill, and perhaps even a steel plate. Permanent repairs to the road can not be made until we have some consistently warm weather.

Irvine says repairs could not be made sooner to the road because the water needs to be turned off to make the repairs and this would impact a neighboring school.
