FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Utility workers discovered an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in a Fort Meade housing area Tuesday afternoon during scheduled maintenance work.
Emergency officials cordoned off a 300 meter area in the Potomac Place neighborhood around 2:19 p.m., according to a news release. Homes were evacuated and, for a short time, traffic was re-routed around the area.
An UXO team responded to the call and determined the device was a World War II-era mortar training round and that it was inactive. The device was removed and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Utility and construction workers on Fort Meade are aware of the potential to encounter UXOs in the course of their work and are trained in proper procedures to report the devices.
