ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WUSA9) -- Anne Arundel County police have arrested a man who they say tried to run over detectives during a traffic stop.

Twenty-four-year-old Dirk Terrell Jr. has been charged with three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment as well as seventeen traffic charges.

On February 18 at approximately 11:30 p.m., police say they stopped a car for driving over the road lines on Mayo Road at Route 2. When officers asked the driver, later identified as Terrell Jr., to turn the ignition off, he suddenly threw the car into reverse and turned the wheels toward two detectives, according to officials.

The detectives were able to jump out of the way and avoid being hit. The suspect then put the vehicle in drive and veered to the left, almost hitting another detective before speeding off down Route 2, officials say.

Police say they searched the area for the suspect vehicle, but were unable to locate it. After further investigation, police identified and arrested Terrell Jr.
