SPRINGDALE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County firefighters tried to rescue a horse tapped in a barn by heavy snow on Thursday morning. But, due to the condition of the horse, they had to euthanize him, officials said.

The firefighters were called to the scene in the 9900 block of Old Ardwick-Ardmore Road in Springdale at approximately 10 a.m.

According to officials, the 31-year-old horse was sick and/or injured, and had become so exhausted from trying to free itself that it collapsed.

There were 17 firefighters/medics who assisted in giving the horse proper care during the incident.
