LAUREL, Md (WUSA9) -- A traffic alert for anyone driving northbound on Maryland US 1 in Laurel.
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) says on the evening of Monday, July 7 they will be temporarily shifting traffic flow on US 1/Baltimore Avenue between Contee Road and the Muirkirk Road Bridge. SHA will be temporarily splitting the northbound lanes with concrete barriers. These changes should start at 6pm when road crews close one lane in each direction.
SHA says this work is associated with the Intercounty Connector (ICC) Project.
Here is more on the lane shifts from a SHA news release:
During the traffic switch the two northbound lanes of US 1 will be temporarily closed and one lane will be redirected onto the current left southbound lane while crews move barrier wall into place. Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 8.
As part of this temporary traffic pattern, the right lane of northbound US 1 will be shifted west until fall to allow crews to work in the closed lane. The new northbound US 1 right lane will be located between two work zones for the duration of this construction phase. The lane closures are necessary to relocate the right lane and perform tie-in paving and lane striping.
Motorists may use I-95 or MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway) to the east as alternate routes. Portable message signs, cones, and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone. In case of inclement weather, this work will occur Tuesday, July 8 into Wednesday, July 9.
SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds and stay alert for work crews. For more information about the project, please call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020, or visit the ICC project web site at www.iccproject.com.
