FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Another hotly contested public hearing is expected in Maryland Tuesday over a proposed firing range in the shadow of Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Some residents who live near the farm where a state of the art firearms training center is planned are bitterly opposed but not for all of the reasons you may think.

Even some gun enthusiasts in rural Frederick County, Md. are saying the gun range proposal is the right idea in the wrong place.

Sugar Loaf Mountain is a natural historic landmark nature preserve and in its shadow, a winery, equestrian center, secluded homes and overwhelming oppositions to a state of the art firearms training center now being considered at the foot of the mountain, where noise is not welcome.

Frederick County Commission Member Billy Shreeve says, "Whether you are for or against the gun range the reality is, the zoning allows it on property many times smaller than the 300-acre spread, where range developers plan to install sound baffles and keep much of the shooting indoors."

The wide range of opponents include businesses like the Greenbrier pet hospital and boarding facility where homeowners are convinced distant gunfire will stress the animals.

Opponents of the shooting range definitely have community passion on their side, however the supporters of the shooting range say the law is on their side.
