FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Six people are without a home after a fire in the Fairview area of Fairfax County on Sunday morning, say Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials.
Firefighters responded to a house at approximately 3:55 a.m., in the 5300 block of Jennifer Drive. They found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the two-story home, and started attacking the blaze from inside and outside the home, according to officials.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes.
The four adults and two children who lived at the home were able to escape the fire before firefighters arrived at the scene. The Red Cross is helping the six people.
According to fire investigators, the fire caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on the deck.
The fire left an estimated $50,000 worth of damage.
