WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The United States Attorney's Office announced Friday that a former Metropolitan Police Department Officer was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl.

Wendel Palmer, 46, a former officer with the Metropolitan Police Department abused a child several times between 2004 and 2006, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr.

Authorities said Palmer was found guilty in November 2013 of three counts of first-degree child sexual abuse with aggravating circumstances, two counts of second-degree child sexual abuse with aggravating circumstances, and two counts of enticing a child with aggravating circumstances.

According to authorities, in addition to his sentence,Palmer will be put on 10 years of supervised release. During that time, he is required to be registered as a sex offender.

Palmer was the youth choir director at the Bethuel Temple Church of Christ Apostolic, Inc. located in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Avenue SE. Authorities said, the girl's family belonged to the church and she was a member of the choir. According to authorities, she started being abused at the age of 10 or 11.

The abuse happened at Palmer's home and sometimes during breaks in choir rehearsals. Authorities said, the girl was too afraid to report the incidents at the time. She reported the abuse in 2012, when she turned 18.
