WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- U.S. Park Police will use a text messaging system to inform the public about 'important information' for July 4th fireworks spectators.

They're asking people to text the term JULY4DC to the number 888777 to "get the latest advisories and notifications covering everything from traffic situations to special events."

U.S. Park Police are using the "Nixle" to send out these alerts. Nixle is a company that offers governments texting services for free.

Nixle is a community information service provider built exclusively to provide secure and reliable communications. Its authenticated service connects municipal agencies and community organizations to residents in real time, delivering information to geographically targeted consumers over their cell phones (via text messages), through e-mails and through Web access. Nixle is offered at no cost to all governments, their agencies and organizations, nongovernmental organizations and consumers.
