WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a corrections officer has been arrested and charged with bribery for allegedly smuggling contraband into a Washington jail, the second officer arrested this month.
Prosecutors say 33-year-old Lenard Fleming was arrested Wednesday. He is a corrections officer with the Corrections Corporation of America, a private company that runs the city's Correctional Treatment Facility. The medium security facility is next to the D.C. Jail. Prosecutors say Fleming met with an undercover FBI agent and agreed to smuggle a cellphone and cigarettes to an inmate in exchange for $750.
Prosecutors say Fleming's arrest is related to the arrest of another corrections officer, 51-year-old Darren Malry who was arrested April 21 and also charged with bribery.
Both men have pleaded not guilty. Fleming's next hearing is scheduled for May 14.
