WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson says that a police officer shot a dog at 1st and Chillum Place in Northeast D.C. on Tuesday morning.

According to the spokesperson, the officer observed a pit bull that had approached a citizen in a threatening manner. Fearing the dog would harm the citizen, the officer discharged his service weapon and hit the dog.

The dog was transported to an animal hospital where it is expected to make a full recovery, says the spokesperson.

Investigators are looking for the dog's owner.
