WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A D.C. man was arrested Thursday for four separate sexual assault and a kidnapping incidents in the District within the month of March.
The Metropolitan Police Department arrested 22-year-old Gerald Canty of Northeast D.C. for three counts of kidnapping, first degree sexual abuse while armed and assault with intent to rob, police said.
Police said all of the incidents happened in the area of the footbridge along Minnesota Avenue NE.
Arrest Made: First Degree Sexual Abuse While Armed/Kidnapping: 700 Block of Barnes Street, NE and the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue, NE
The first incident happened March 1, around 11 a.m. according to authorities. A woman was walking in the area of the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue, NE, when Canty came up behind her. Canty pulled out a handgun and forced the woman to walk with him, along side a residence in the 700 block of Barnes Street, NE, where he sexually assaulted her, police said. Canty then fled.
The second incident happened on March 5 around 11:30 a.m. when a woman was walking in the area of the 700 block of 44th Street, NE. She was also approached from behind by Canty. He forced her to walk with him. Police said Canty tried to take her belongings but she fought him off and escaped.
March 7 around 7:05 a.m. a teenager was walking in the area of the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue, NE when she was also approached from behind. Canty took the same steps as the previous incidents. The victim was able to runaway.
Also on March 7 around 7:25 a.m. a teenager was walking in the same area when Canty came up behind her. He asked her to come to him. She refused and fled before anything could happen, police said.
