WASHINGTON (WUSA9/AP) - The National Park Service has announced the predicted peak bloom dates for Washington's cherry blossom trees.

On Tuesday morning, NPS reported that the peak was expected between April 8 and April 12. WUSA9's Bruce Leshan was there for the announcement.

Peak bloom has come as early as March 15 and as late as April 18. The average is April 4-5. So the forecast is just a little later than usual.

Organizers are also announcing plans for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which will run from March 20 to April 13. The festival features a wide variety of events celebrating the trees and Japanese culture.

WUSA9's Andrea Roane and Mike Hydeck will co-host the 2014 Cherry Blossom Parade on April 12.

This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees from Japan as a symbol of friendship with the United States.
