WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- D.C. council member Muriel Bowser won the straw poll in her district, Ward 4, following a DC mayoral candidates debate there on Wednesday night.
That victory means Bowser has won both of the race's first two straw polls.
WUSA 9's Bruce Johnson tweeted on Thursday morning:
Bowser issued a statement later Thursday morning. It read:
"Ward 4 has spoken, and with 49% of the total vote, we won the Ward 4 Democrats' straw poll vote last night. Two-thirds voted against Mayor Gray. This sends a message to #All8Wards that DC is ready for a fresh start.
Today, Ward 4 is bigger and more diverse than ever before. Five years ago, I made a commitment to get the job done by transforming the area with solutions that work for every resident. But my work doesn't stop here, for I'm committed to making this city better and stronger by providing opportunities for business growth and infrastructure investment, while accomplishing education equality and economic justice throughout #All8Wards.
As a city we're growing, but we need to continue to find innovative solutions to continue moving DC forward – that's my promise if elected DC Mayor.
Thanks to your support, we have the opportunity to make real progress in the District of Columbia. We are almost there!"
