HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Schools systems in the mid-Atlantic region are closing or delaying opening as authorities warn motorists to take care on slick roads during an icy winter storm.
The National Weather Service says a quarter to a third of an inch of ice could accumulate by Wednesday morning across a wide area from western Maryland to northern Delaware, including the Baltimore and Washington suburbs. Crews have been salting roads around the region overnight.
Maryland emergency management officials report rising power outages with 73,000 customers in the dark, mostly in counties north and west of Baltimore.
The federal government is open, but workers can telework or take unscheduled leave. Delaware state government offices in New Castle County are opening at 10 a.m. Liberal leave is in effect for Maryland state workers until noon.
