COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) --Since 2007, any person affiliated with the University of Maryland has been able to subscribe to UMD alert, however as of Wednesday only current students, faculty and staff will be receiving the UMD alerts.
UMD said they are committed to ensuring the safety of all members of the university community, especially during emergency situations. Due to the large number of subscribers in the past, roughly 160,000, the system had issues at times and messages were delayed.
In an effort to improve the speed of notification to the campus community, UMD alerts, both text and email will only be sent to current staff, faculty and students.
UMD said all registered students and employees will stay in the system and do not need to anything in order to stay subscribed to the alerts.
