ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia State Police say a motorcyclist lost his life when he was thrown from his bike and then struck by a car on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County on Wednesday night.

The incident happened before 11:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-495, just before Exit 173/Van Dorn Street, according to state police. The area is a work zone. Police said in a press release, "Three right lanes were closed to through traffic for the work zone; the three left lanes were open to through traffic. The lanes leading up to the work zone were milled and then there was a 2 -3 inch lip at the start of new pavement."

Thirty-six-year-old Michael A. Greenman of Alexandria, Va. was riding his motorcycle when it struck the lip of new pavement, say police. He lost control of the bike, and he and the bike were thrown into another lane. He was then hit by a car and died at the scene, according to police.

No charges were filed against the driver of the car, who was not injured in the crash.
