FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) --- The Chikungunya virus infects the person through a mosquito bite. The incurable virus is not highly fatal. However, the symptoms may last weeks or even months, according to Dr. Sujata Ambardar, Infectious Diseases Physician at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Chikungunya symptoms include: Joint Pains, Fever, Rash, Headache

Dr. Ambardar's Advice to Traveling Americans:

Americans returning from The World Cup in Brazil and other international destinations should take caution. The Chikungunya cases within the United States have all come from people returning from traveling abroad.

Meanwhile, more American doctors need to learn about Chikungunya, so they may screen for the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 50 cases of Chikungunya in the United States thus far.

Chikungunya is a word from Tanzania, where the virus was first discovered in the early 2000's.
