ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) --Starting July 1, 2014 parking meter hours in Old Town will be extended. You'll have to pay to park until 9 p.m. citywide Monday through Saturday. Current parking meter hours are 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

This is part of the budget approved by the City Council.

The City Council also voted to add metered parking hours in Carlyle on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Currently parking meter enforcement is for the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

City officials say the new hours "are intended to promote parking turnover, make on-street spaces available to short-term visitors, encourage long-term parking at off-street facilities and parking garages, and promote the use other modes of transportation such as Metro, DASH, and the free Old Town Trolley."

Multi-space meter rates are $1.75 per hour, or $1.25 per hour at single-space meters.

There is a two week grace period before you'll get ticketed. Which means July 14 drivers consider yourselves warned!
