FORT WASHINGTON, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Capital Wheel will open to the public on Friday, May 23, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
The giant 175-foot observational wheel arrived at the National Harbor by barge in February. The wheel has 42 closed, climate controlled gondolas which seat eight people each.
The diameter of the wheel is 165 feet, and from the top you'll be able to see the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol.
To celebrate the opening, the Capital Wheel will have extended operating hours between May and August from from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Tickets will cost $15 for adults and $11.25 for children ages three to 11. Children two and under ride free.
The National Harbor is joining cities with observational wheels including London, Seattle, Niagara Falls, Brisbane, Perth, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Malacca Island, Pigeon Forge and Myrtle Beach.
