BRISTOW, Va. (WUSA9) -- Officials have arrested and charged two people for animal cruelty and taken 59 animals from their property.
Larry Dale Sams, 58 and Carolyn Mae Sams, 33 have been arrested and charged. Larry Sams has been charged with 57 counts of animal cruelty, police said.
Officials received information from a citizen, regarding the condition of animals at the Cross State's Stable which is located at 12108 Nokesville Road. The citizen reported of several animals which appeared to be emaciated and in need of medical care.
Officials visited the property with Animal Control Officers and a veterinarian on April 14.
They found many animals in poor condition. Some of them were clearly in need of medical care. There also appeared to be inadequate food and water available for them. Dead animals and animal parts that were disposed of improperly, were also found. The stalls were found covered with animal feces and water containers were not properly cleaned, officials said.
The animals included 17 horses, 19 sheep, 27 rabbits, 50 poultry, six goats, two donkeys, one cow, four dogs, and one llama.
Animal Control Officers then executed a search warrant and removed 59 of the animals from the property.
Some of these animals had to be euthanized due to their poor condition of health. The rest of the animals are being cared for by the Animal Control staff.
