MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- A 9-year-old boy faces gun charges after bringing a disassembled handgun with him to elementary school.
Police say the boy brought the gun to Ellis Elementary School, located at 10400 Kim Graham Lane in Manassas, Va., on April 24 in its carrying case and showed it to several students while on school property.
The incident was reported to a teacher by another student after seeing the gun, and the teacher reported the incident to school administrators, who took possession of the gun and contacted police.
Officers responded to the school and secured the handgun without incident. Because it was disassembled, it could not be fired.
The boy is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, and 29-year-old Travis Pettie, Sr., a "known acquaintance" of the boy, was arrested for not properly securing the handgun, police say.
Pettie, of the 10100 block of Statesboro Court in Manassas, Va., is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor
