LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two families are displaced after a fire at a home in Maryland.

The fire started around 1:45 p.m. at a one-story duplex home located at the 7700 block of Greenleaf Road. Fire appeared to have started from the first floor and had extended up into the attic. It also appeared to have gone through a protective firewall in between two homes with the fire spreading to the attached structure, officials said.

No one was home at the time of the fire but a family pet was removed from the attached structure which was also exposed to the fire. The small black poodle had been exposed to heavy smoke and was handed over to a family friend, officials said.

It took 30 minutes to put out the fire. The cause of the fire is still not known at this point. Both families will be displaced as a result of this fire, officials said.
