ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- A cafeteria manager at Barcroft Elementary School is in custody after she threatened a school administrator with a knife and told police she had a gun, say Arlington County Police.
According to police, a school administrator and the cafeteria manager got into an argument inside an office in the cafeteria on Wednesday morning. At some point, the argument turned physical. Police say the school administrator then left the area, but came back a short time later to check on the welfare of the cafeteria manager. Police say that's when the cafeteria manager grabbed a knife.
Police arrived at the scene a short time later. The cafeteria manager told police she had a gun and reached for her back, according to police. An officer then deployed a taser on the cafeteria manager.
Medical personnel arrived to evaluate the manager and she was transported to the Virginia Hospital Center for a mental evaluation, say police.
A police official says no charges will be filed because the school system has refused to press charges.
School officials aren't releasing many details about the incident, however, they are sending home a letter to parents which reads:
Dear Barcroft Families:
I wanted to update you about an incident that occurred at our school this morning. At approximately 11:15 a.m., a Barcroft employee was detained by the Arlington Police after the staff member's behavior escalated into a threat toward another employee, and required intervention.
The incident occurred in an office away from areas where students are located, and the safety of our students was immediately secured. Police were contacted and as a precaution, the school was locked down when they arrived at the scene. Within five minutes, the employee was removed from the school and the lockdown was lifted.
While we understand that many people would like to have the details of this incident, it is considered a personnel matter, and we cannot divulge additional information. But I want to assure everyone that students are safe and were not affected by the occurrence.
All further action as a result of this incident will be taken in accordance with our policies.
Please be assured that all of us at Barcroft and Arlington Public Schools take these matters very seriously, and appropriate action will be taken to address the issue and ensure our students continued safety at all times.
