CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9) -- Charles County Sheriff's Office is mailing refunds to drivers who were fined for speeding in the Jennifer Elementary school zone.

According to CCSO, they have started sending refunds to drivers who got speeding tickets from the automated speed enforcement camera located on the westbound side of MD Route 228 (Berry Road) between July 30, 2013 and July 31, 2013.

The sheriff's office said the camera was not properly placed at that location after an internal audit of the automated speed enforcement program was done.

The camera was deactivated as soon this was noted.

Car owners should be receiving the refunds sometime this week along with anybody who made an official notification they were responsible for the violation and paid the fine the sheriff's office said.

According to the sheriff's office some 3,428 refunds are being issued, summing up to a total cost of $137,280. The money will come from revenues from the speed enforcement camera program.

If you have any questions regarding the program or the refunds please contact CCSO Automated Enforcement Unit at 301-932-3519 Monday - Friday between 8:30 a.m and 4:00 p.m.
