PASADENA, Md. -- An officer shot a dog while canvassing a neighborhood to locate a witness to a burglary, police said.

The incident happened on Saturday around 4:12 p.m. when a one-year veteran officer with the Anne Arundel County Police Department was canvassing a neighborhood in an attempt to find a witness to a burglary. When he went to the home located on 905 Lombardee Circle, a dog confronted the officer in the front part of the house. The officer then shot the dog twice. The dog died at the scene, police said.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department says there will be a full investigative review. Chief of Police Kevin Davis went to the home of the owner's of "Vern", the Labrador killed in this incident. Davis said, "My deepest condolences go out to the family of "Vern" during this extremely difficult time. I personally met with the family at their residence to let them know that our department will be conducting an internal investigation into the incident to ensure that all of the pertinent facts are known, and to advance discussions regarding best practices for law enforcement when encountering animals."
