PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY (WUSA9) -- Police are honoring one of their K9 hero's, "Rebel" who died in the line of duty on this day in 1984.

Rebel was withCorporal Joseph Wing atMount Rainier Junior High School responding to a reported burglary. Rebel was able to find the suspect inside the building. The suspect stabbed Rebel in the chest when he moved towards him. The suspect then tried to attack Corporal Wing, officials said.

Rebel was taken to a veterinarian where he died of his injuries.

He was five years old at the time of his death and the first K9 member of this agency to die on the field. He had been part of the Police Department for two years, police said.
