WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Adoption Counselor Kristi Curtis of the Briggs Animal Adoption Center visited with Velvet for our Petline 9 segment at noon on Thursday.

BAAC says Velvet is a friendly and happy dog. She is a one-year-old spayed red-merle Catahoula Leopard dog who weighs 45 pounds.

In 1979, the Catahoula Leopard Dog was named the state dog of Louisiana. These dogs are an active, intelligent breed and are high-energy. (No couch potatoes need apply for this girl!) Catahoula dogs have been used on ranches for herding but can also be gentle and loving with their family.

It's important that their human companion(s) keep them busy and socialize them well, says BAAC. Velvet likes other dogs and has been wonderful at Briggs, say staff members.
