Washington (WUSA9) - DC Health inspectors abruptly closed the Piney Branch Safeway, 6500 Piney Branch Rd. NW, posting an "imminent health hazard" placard on the store's doors Thursday.
A spokesman for Safeway said a customer had complained to the health department - and not the store - about seeing mouse evidence.
Inspectors responded to the store and ordered workers to close, according to Safeway.
The spokesman blamed the infestation on recent cold weather.
Safeway said crews are cleaning the store from top to bottom and the chain is doubling extermination efforts at the location.
The store must pass a health department reinspection before being allowed to serve the public.
