WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- As you age there are a myriad of changes that your body may face. But men, may have more to worry about than protruding belles'. If you are a male over the age of 50 there is a chance that you may suffer from sagging eyelids.

Saggy eyelids is a condition known as dermatochalasis, which consists of excess skin that accumulates on the eyelids, and is usually seen in middle-age or older adults.

Certain risk factors include:

  • Age
  • Being male
  • Lighter skin complexion
  • Higher body mass index
  • Smoking

Typically a cosmetic concern, sagging eyelids also cause issues to your overall health. That include but is not limited to visual field loss, ocular or eyelid irritation, headaches because individuals force themselves to elevate their brow in order to see better.

The Rotterdam study, published in JAMA Dermatology studied 5,578 individuals and concluded that nearly 17.8 percent displayed moderate to severe sagging eyelids.

To date, there are no other observational studies that have examined the risks of saggy eyelids.
