WASHINGTON (WUSA9)--Wash your hands and get your flu vaccine because the flu virus is spreading fast.

Although late in the season, the flu virus is sweeping across our area, especially in Virginia. Recently, a child died from the flu in Northern Virginia. Across the country, 37 children died. The Centers for Disease Control says the Commonwealth ranks in the 10 states with the highest level of influenza-like illness.

Dr. Yasmin Khan of Inova Medical Group says, "The CDC also reported that a younger group is getting flu this season."

Over the last two weeks, Dr. Khan noticed a huge influx of patients in Falls Church, Va. She says it is important to take action to prevent this virus from spreading.

"You can get the flu and not have a symptom, but you can transmit it up to six feet," Dr. Khan said.

According to Dr. Khan, cough and flu viruses can even sit on surfaces for up to 8 hours.

The flu season usually lasts from October to March, but before we can breathe easy below are some tips on how to survive this flu season:

  • Get the flu vaccine (This is the best means of prevention)
  • Cover your mouth when you cough
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your face because germs accumulate fast around the eyes, nose and mouth
  • Physical exercise
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
